Our Skilling Programme (For Classes 6,7,8)

A LOOK INTO THE METHODOLOGY

This TEACHING METHODOLOGY presents Incense Sticks Making as an Activity -Based Teaching Learning (ABTL) for all ages. This also outlines the importance and relevance of Incense Making, its stature in our culture and our society.

The objective of this proposed practice is to enhance learning beyond the classroom mode. Today education is not just about rote classroom learning; gone are the days when classrooms were devoted to verbatim recitations from the textbooks.

Only reading the procedure through notes or lectures and absence of activity will not suffice this methodology. To meet the objective, different activities and worksheets are attached to make the Activity Based Learning comprehensive.

Effective Learning framework:

This Activity Based Teaching Learning (ABTL) is an effort to overcome the limitations of lecture mode of course delivery. The framework includes:

  1. Creating awareness about Recycling and Sustainable Production of goods
  2. Relating these activities to daily life
  3. Skill Development for students; even for specially abled and autistic children.(PwD)
  4. Promoting a green footprint.
  5. Dignity of Labour.

In the proposed approach, the activity-based learning provides more opportunities to learn beyond the classroom teaching. Effectiveness of these activities is holistic development of children and adults while giving them an insight into our rich culture and natural resources at the same time.

Education today aims towards a sustainable future. It must prepare the students for real life. Essential life skills and skill development for students is major aspiration for curriculum creators. It is not just about the Intelligence Quotient, but also about Emotional Intelligence, Social Intelligence and Skill Quotient today.

Scope for Vocational Education:

The National Educational Policy 2024 envisages Skill Development as a major subject to be promoted along with formal education to school-going children. This is to equip them with life skills to be ready for the job market as they attain adulthood. The NEP 2024 places renewed emphasis on holistic learning, digital literacy and skill development. It aims to ensure inclusivity in India’s academic landscape. By 2025, there is a goal for 50% of the learners to have vocational training exposure.

Other goals include-

  1. Overall cognitive, emotional and societal development of students.
  2. Inclusivity and equity.
  3. Bridging gaps between vocational and formal education.
  4. Flexible learning.
  5. Vocational training internship to start from class 6.
  6. Empowering the youth with skill sets that will enable their employment in relevant sectors.
  7. Teaching children about sustainability, recycling and promoting a green footprint.

Keeping in mind the NEP goals and framework for skill development, 3 different modules have been envisaged, all different for Classes 6, 7 and 8, keeping in mind their learning capabilities and aspirations.

Level I is for Class 6. It introduces the children to their immediate environment, makes them understand how their daily lives are so closely intertwined with their immediate surroundings; it introduces them to the concepts of “ Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” and the SDGs as envisaged by the United Nations ;to make them conscious global citizens. They are given a step by step guidance on making incense in an experiential set up of learning also involving You Tube tutorials. Then there are worksheets for them to arise in them a curious bent of mind.

Level 2  is for Class 7. Here the children are given an insight into the history of incense making and perfumery, the various trees and flora important for incense making industry and the products which are used in incense making. The environmental impact of floral waste management is understood. The child amalgamates fields as diverse as chemistry and botany as she learns about essential oils and species of the flora available for incense making. The NEP vision of amalgamating different streams holistically  has been  employed as the children get an insight into  the use of Aromatherapy  in Ayurveda and therapeutic and limbic benefits of the same .Again  worksheets and activities have  been assimilated for a more comprehensive way of teaching -learning.

Level 3 is for Class 8. Here the student is given a bird’s eye  view of the skill  to make him industry ready and take up incense making as a full fledged career option with all the pros and cons being laid infront of him.

Incense making on a large scale scale, mechanisation and  the factory module of incense  making is introduced to him. In the previous two modules, the focus was on making hand made incense. This  changes in the level 3 module. There are lessons on entrepreneurship, how the student must be aware of the legalities, the compliances, the government support available to him as an entrepreneur, the route of MSME and Start Ups. How he can avail of funding , how he can market and pitch his product and so on from the perspective  of the Incense Industry. You tube links for incense making factory , industrial machines and perfumery have also been provided. Therefore this module incorporates some financial literacy and entrepreneurship lessons as well. There are thoughtfully curated worksheets and activities to assist his journey of learning.

We have named this DIY Kit as Hocus Pocus©, to  conjure up some images of fun as well as magic! The magic of creating a divine olfactory experience all by yourself!

We hope this Kit and Module together serve to achieve the goal of Skill Development , a novel concept in our pedagogy in a meaningful and interesting way. The module does not boast of  being all encompassing thesis in the field of incense making. It is an effort to skim through the most important facets of this skill so as to provide the student a viable career option amidst the plethora of choices available today.

The other major goal that this module seeks to achieve is to sensitize the student on environment issues to make her a  globally conscious citizen. Through this module it is hoped that the student learns to make mindful choices and their impact on the environment to become meaningful value creating citizens of the world!
